Stolen Money-Revealed Truth

This happened when I was in 10th class at KISS, Bhubaneswar. That day was Parents’ Meet, and my elder brother had come to meet me and gave me ₹700. I kept that money in the pocket of a dress and locked it inside my bag.

That day, all the 10th class students were told to serve food to the parents, so we all went to do that. When I came back, I saw the lock was broken, and the dress in which I had kept the money was also missing. I told my friends about it, and they caught one boy who hadn’t gone to serve food that day. Since he was the only one who stayed back in the room, it seemed like he was the only one who could have taken the money.

So, my friends caught him, and everyone beat him up badly. But he didn’t confess that he had stolen it. I felt pity for him because beating someone up just based on suspicion isn’t right, and even after taking such a beating, he wasn’t confessing — so I felt like maybe he really hadn’t stolen it. I told my friends to leave him and let it go. What’s done is done.

About 4–5 months passed after that incident. One day, I was sleeping in the hostel, and when I woke up, I overheard that same boy telling his friends that he was the one who had stolen my money that day. He was telling them the whole truth, not knowing that I was listening to them.

By then, it had already been 4–5 months, and I had completely forgotten about the money. So I just let it go, said nothing — but the truth came out in the end.
